The Vesak poya day

                     Vesak Poya Day

Vesak Poya is considered a very important and revered Poya day for the Buddhist people of Sri Lanka. Three important events in the life of the Buddha - his birth, enlightenment and death - are celebrated on this day. Therefore, Vesak Poya is a very sacred and beloved day for Buddhists.

During Vesak, there is an atmosphere of religious and cultural festivities everywhere in Sri Lanka. Buddhists go to temples to observe the precepts, make offerings to the Buddha and listen to the Dhamma. These activities help purify the mind and improve morality.

Another special feature of Vesak Poya is the lighting of Vesak lamps and lanterns. Colorfully decorated lamps and lanterns illuminate homes, roads and cities. At the same time, pandals are created to present the stories of the Buddha to the public with images and lights. This is a spectacular and educational experience.

Also, holding “Dansal” during Vesak is a very important tradition. Providing free food and drinks to the people promotes kindness, compassion and charity. This is a valuable act that demonstrates the basic qualities of the Buddhist tradition.

On Vesak Poya Day, Buddhists try to live a moral life by abstaining from alcohol and meat and not harming animals. Also, Vesak Poya is considered an opportunity to strengthen social ties between people and spread happiness and peace.

Finally, Vesak Poya is not only a religious festival, but also a sacred day that purifies the human heart and develops good qualities. It is a valuable opportunity that guides us to build our lives on the noble teachings of the Buddha.
